{"id":2866,"date":"2022-08-31T11:43:07","date_gmt":"2022-08-31T09:43:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/weblog.wur.eu\/international-students\/?p=2866"},"modified":"2024-07-08T13:57:01","modified_gmt":"2024-07-08T11:57:01","slug":"3-things-to-do-after-your-arrival-in-wageningen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/weblog.wur.eu\/international-students\/2022\/08\/31\/3-things-to-do-after-your-arrival-in-wageningen\/","title":{"rendered":"3 things to do after your arrival in Wageningen!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 17\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 4\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p><em>Updated on: 31 August 2022<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Upon arrival at the university, several things need to be done before you can start.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;color: #339966\">BSN &#8211; Citizen Service Number \/ Burger Service Nummer<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>What is BSN? <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The citizen service <\/span><b>number<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (<\/span><b>BSN<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) or Burger Service Nummer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Dutch is a unique personal number that you acquire once you register in the Personal Records Database (BRP) at the municipality. Everyone who registers in the BRP is automatically assigned a BSN number.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>When to get a BSN?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> If you stay longer than 6 months in The Netherlands, you need to register yourself at the municipality. Therefore, if you are studying for a Master&#8217;s or if you started your Bachelor&#8217;s here at Wageningen University you need to have a BSN.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The government uses this number to know where are you living and keeps track of your data. It is useful if you want to have a part-time job in The Netherlands but also to get health insurance or if you need to go to the hospital or to apply for rent subsidy<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you move abroad, your BSN will still remain valid and you can continue using your BSN.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Where to get the BSN?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (In the first week, people from the municipality come to the university for a couple of days to make registration easier for students. An appointment time and date will be provided by the university. If you are unable to make it at the given time, the alternative is to visit the Municipality.)\u00a0 Once you arrive in Wageningen it is recommended, during your first week, to visit the Municipality, situated in the city centre (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Gemeente+Wageningen\/@51.964479,5.6633067,15z\/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x994317a58331cf62!8m2!3d51.964479!4d5.6633067\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Municipality Location<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Opening hours:<\/b> Monday through Thursday from 8.30 to 16.00 hrs and Friday from 8.30 to 20.00 hrs<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\">\u00a0Always bring a valid passport or identity card to your appointment.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\">Address: Stadhuis, Markt 22, Postbus 1, 6700 AA<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/weblog.wur.eu\/international-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/07\/PHOTO-2019-06-28-18-23-05.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2869 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/weblog.wur.eu\/international-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/07\/PHOTO-2019-06-28-18-23-05-169x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"169\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/weblog.wur.eu\/international-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/07\/PHOTO-2019-06-28-18-23-05-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/weblog.wur.eu\/international-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/07\/PHOTO-2019-06-28-18-23-05-768x1366.jpg 768w, https:\/\/weblog.wur.eu\/international-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/07\/PHOTO-2019-06-28-18-23-05-576x1024.jpg 576w, https:\/\/weblog.wur.eu\/international-students\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2019\/07\/PHOTO-2019-06-28-18-23-05.jpg 899w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;color: #339966\"><b> OV-chipkaart\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The most common way to pay for public transport is with an OV-chipkaart. This is a personal card that can be charged with credit (through a Dutch bank account). It is the most convenient option to travel. You can only buy the OV-chipkaart from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ov-chipkaart.nl\/purchase-an-ov-chipkaart\/personal-ov-chipkaart.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">OV-chipkaart website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The personal card has a small initial fee and it requires the person\u2019s photo and address. More importantly, having a Dutch bank account while applying for the card is a must.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you acquire an OV-chipkaart, you can review your travel expenses online, so you can check where and when you have been. This allows you to have proof if you need to ask for a travel refund when you move around with public transport due to work trips or others.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Enables you to get plans that can give you a discount (up to 40%) on public transport fares.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The alternative is to get a regular OV chipkaart. This is a general card that can be loaded with money and used for travel. Once the forms are sent, the university applies for the account to make the procedure less time-consuming. However, there are also other banks like ING or Rabo Bank in Wageningen. Students also prefer to personally apply to have an account in either of these banks.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Here are some banks in Wageningen:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 9\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ol>\n<li><strong>ABN AMRO<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abnamro.nl\/en\/personal\/index.html\">www.abnamro.nl<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; Stadsbrink 519<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rabobank<\/strong>:<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rabobank.nl\/particulieren\/servicemenu\/english_pages\/\"> www.rabobank.nl &#8211; <\/a>Plantsoen 55<\/li>\n<li><strong>ING<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ing.nl\">www.ing.nl<\/a> &#8211; Stadsbrink 445<\/li>\n<li><strong>SNS:<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sns.nl\"> www.sns.nl<\/a> &#8211; Hoogstraat 11<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;color: #339966\"><b> Bike<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can either buy a new or a second-hand bicycle. In Facebook groups such as &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/192901857389536\/\">Wageningen Student Plaza<\/a>.&#8221;, you can very often see posts made by other students that are selling their bikes. You can also check the bicycle shops listed below which sell both new and second-hand bikes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">DRF Fietsservice &#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Boterstraat 2B, 6701 CW Wageningen<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">U&amp;A Fiestsen &#8211; Churchillweg 92, 6706 AD Wageningen<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Van De Wetering Tweewielers &#8211; Harnjesweg 86, 6706 AV Wageningen<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Trade FRM &#8211; Bronland 4, Gebouw E, 6708 PB Wageningen<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Marktplaats (sell &amp; buy second-hand shop) &#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marktplaats.nl\"> https:\/\/www.marktplaats.nl <\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Apart from these shops there is also a possibility of ordering a brand new bike for a reasonable price from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.decathlon.nl\">Decathlon<\/a>. The only issue is assembling the bike, as you will receive the bike in parts after a few days of delivery period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 100\"><a href=\"https:\/\/swapfiets.nl\/\">Swapfiets<\/a> is another good option. This is a bike rental company, where you can get a bike for a fixed price per month. This way, you do not need to buy a bike because Swapfiets has one for you!
