Don&#8217;t forget to check <a href=\"https:\/\/weblog.wur.eu\/international-students\/2024\/02\/23\/from-a-z-studying-at-wur-pt-1\/\">blog pt. 1<\/a> (if you haven&#8217;t yet)!<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #339966;text-decoration: underline\">N<\/span>etworking<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Networking is an important part of student life here at WUR. Whether in classes during group work, in study associations (see <em><span style=\"color: #339966\">V<\/span>ereniging<\/em> below), or in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wur.nl\/en\/sports-centre-de-bongerd.htm\">Sports Centre de Bongerd<\/a>, you are bound to meet plenty of interesting people to socialise with.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><span style=\"color: #339966;text-decoration: underline\">O<\/span>siris<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wur.nl\/en\/education-programmes\/current-students\/osiris.htm\">Osiris<\/a> is a portal where you can manage your student information, course and exam enrolment, and study progress. Here, you can also access the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wur.nl\/en\/education-programmes\/current-students\/schedule-study-handbook.htm\">Study Handbook<\/a> that provides you with official information about courses.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong><span style=\"color: #339966;text-decoration: underline\">P<\/span>eriods<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>There are three periods per semester \u2013 two eight-week periods and one four-week period. In the former, there are six weeks of lectures, one study week without any lectures and an exam week. Students usually follow two courses during an eight-week period. In a four-week period you follow only one course instead of two, and the examination takes place in the final week. There is no study week in a four-week period.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #339966;text-decoration: underline\">Q<\/span>uestions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Is this the right programme for me? Which specialisation should I choose? What is living in Wageningen like?<\/p>\n<p>I remember very well the endless stream of questions before I arrived at WUR. You can give it another try during one of the three <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wur.nl\/en\/education-programmes\/study-abroad-and-exchange-students\/incoming-students-to-wageningen-university\/resit-exams.htm\">Resit weeks<\/a>! These are scheduled in February, May and July. Just make sure that you enrol for the appropriate resit period.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #339966;text-decoration: underline\">S<\/span>cholarships<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>To help out prospective international master&#8217;s students, Wageningen University offers several possibilities for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wur.nl\/en\/education-programmes\/master\/practical-information-masters\/scholarships-for-international-masters-students.htm\">scholarships<\/a>. These depend on your country of origin and residence permit in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #339966;text-decoration: underline\">T<\/span>utorials<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Next to the usual lectures, WUR also offers practical sessions, lab work and tutorials, depending on your field of study. Here you get to apply your knowledge and gain practical skills. Tutorials and practicals are often compulsory, so make sure you don\u2019t miss them!<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #339966;text-decoration: underline\">U<\/span>nderstanding<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Moving to a different country can be challenging. To help you understand the Dutch culture, WUR organises the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aidwageningen.nl\/\">Annual Introduction Days<\/a> (AID). This is where you will get to know your fellow students, experience what the student life has to offer and explore the campus and the town of Wageningen. To improve your Dutch language, you can follow a course at WUR\u2019s language centre<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wur.nl\/en\/education-programmes\/wageningen-into-languages.htm\"> in\u2019to Languages<\/a>. Make sure to sign up quickly though, the places are limited!<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #339966;text-decoration: underline\">V<\/span>ereniging<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>There are Three types of <em>Vereniging<\/em> (Dutch word for &#8216;association&#8217;): <em>Studieverenigingen<\/em> (<strong>Study<\/strong> Associations), <em>Studentenverenigingen<\/em> (<strong>Student<\/strong> Associations) and <em>Studentensportverenigingen<\/em> (<strong>Student Sport<\/strong> Associations).<\/p>\n<p><em>The aim of <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wur.nl\/en\/sports-centre-de-bongerd\/swu-thymos\/student-sports-associations.htm\"><strong>Study<\/strong> Associations<\/a>\u00a0is to support the students of their related study programs. This is where you can meet your peers, as well as attend various events, for example excursions. A membership can also often get you a discount on your study books.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wur.nl\/en\/education-programmes\/current-students\/extracurriculair-activities\/study-and-student-associations-1.htm\"><strong>Student<\/strong> Associations<\/a> are mainly focused on free time activities and socialising. They organise parties, pub quizzes, dinners and more!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wur.nl\/en\/sports-centre-de-bongerd\/swu-thymos\/student-sports-associations.htm\"><strong>Student<\/strong> <strong>Sport<\/strong> Associations<\/a> are organised around a specific sport. These are a great opportunity to dive into various topics as well as meet new people.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">e<span style=\"color: #339966;text-decoration: underline\">X<\/span>change<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Apologies for cheating a little, but I thought that it would be nice to mention the possibility to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wur.nl\/en\/education-programmes\/study-abroad-and-exchange-students\/outgoing-from-wageningen-university.htm\">study abroad during your studies<\/a>. This could be for a study exchange, an internship or for your thesis. You might even be eligible for a grant!<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #339966;text-decoration: underline\">Y<\/span>ou!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>WUR is one of the smaller universities in the Netherlands, and Wageningen is a small town. This means that you will form close relationships with the people around you. The lecturers and professors will likely know you by your name and their approach will be personal. After all, you will meet many of them outside of the lecture halls \u2013 for example at the weekly market in the city centre. Therefore, you, as an individual, are an important part of the community!<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #339966;text-decoration: underline\">Z<\/span>elfstudie<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em>Zelfstudie<\/em> (Dutch word for &#8216;self-study&#8217;) is an important aspect of your studies here at WUR. It provides you with the opportunity to catch up with the compulsory readings, work on your assignments or finish your group-work project. Be aware that this is not always scheduled in the timetable.
