{"id":6165,"date":"2024-08-16T11:16:58","date_gmt":"2024-08-16T09:16:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/weblog.wur.eu\/international-students\/?p=6165"},"modified":"2024-08-16T11:16:58","modified_gmt":"2024-08-16T09:16:58","slug":"how-the-ice-age-determined-wageningen-universitys-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/weblog.wur.eu\/international-students\/2024\/08\/16\/how-the-ice-age-determined-wageningen-universitys-home\/","title":{"rendered":"How the Ice Age Determined Wageningen University&#8217;s Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Have you ever Googled the location of WUR and, like me, wondered: \u2018why on Earth is the most famous agricultural university in the world located in the middle of nowhere?\u2019 Well, the easy answer is that Wageningen University and Research is the continuation of a much older institution \u2013 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wur.nl\/en\/about-wur\/facts-and-figures-1\/history-of-wageningen-university-research.htm\">National Agricultural College<\/a> (<em>Rijkslandbouwschool<\/em>) that was established in 1876 in Wageningen. However, the real reason is much, much more interesting and surprising: Ice Age!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Rivers and glaciers<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Before the second-to-last Ice Age, more than 500.000 years ago, rivers from central and eastern Europe carried material to what is now the Netherlands. Clays, gravels and sands were deposited here and formed the base of the present-day soils. During the following Ice Age, the glaciers pushed rocky and sandy materials from northern Europe towards the south, and eventually reached as far as Wageningen. Strong winds from the North sea carried sands across the country and formed dunes. There are river flood plains, sand and clay grounds, and even hills (a rare occurrence in the Netherlands). This means that the soils in the area are varied and fertile \u2013 ideal for agricultural research, for instance. Fertile and diverse soils, formed thanks to ice ages, are the reason why the National Agricultural College was set up here in Wageningen in the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century.
