Last Saturday, 15 March, our spring edition Bachelor\u2019s Open Day took place! Did you manage to come visit?<\/p>\n

If you are considering doing a bachelor’s at Wageningen University & Research (WUR), but couldn\u2019t visit every stand or didn\u2019t have the opportunity to attend, then this blog is just for you! I will share my experience and some of the highlights of the day.<\/p>\n

Info-markets<\/strong><\/h2>\n

WUR offers 21 Bachelor programmes<\/a>, 8 of which are English-taught. All of the programmes have stands where you can talk with professors and current students, and where you’ll be able to sense the connection between professors and students<\/em><\/strong>,<\/em> which WUR highly values. Also, you get a taste of the programmes through the engaging and interactive demonstrations, which allow you to experience the hands-on and practical orientation<\/em><\/strong> of the University.<\/p>\n

I went around the info markets and here are my favourites which captured my interest:<\/p>\n

Plant Sciences<\/h3>\n

In the Plant Sciences<\/strong><\/a> stand it was shown how well plants thrive and develop under specific light conditions and wavelengths. I talked with the representatives from the study and they explained all the science behind it, and honestly, it was very intriguing! The key takeaway is that most growth can be observed when using far-red light since plants interpret it as “overshadowing”, triggering a competitive response, promoting them to grow more rapidly.<\/p>\n

Data Science for Global Challenges<\/h3>\n

Did you know there’s a new bachelor’s programme offered at WUR? That’s the Data Science for Global Challenges<\/strong><\/a> programme, which you can now sign up for to start coming September 2025. This programme focuses on addressing and designing innovative solutions for global challenges through the power of data science! \ud83d\ude80<\/p>\n

Food Technology<\/h3>\n

Lastly, I visited the stand from the programme I am studying – Food Technology<\/strong><\/a>! They had interactive demonstrations of different aspects of food science such as microbiology, rheology, ingredient functionality, protein transition and even 3D food printing.<\/p>\n

During the Open Day you could participate on tours during the whole day. These tours are organized so that you get to see our campus and also learn some interesting facts about each of the buildings or the campus area. My favourite facts are that Orion was supposed to be built in a different orientation and that there are 100 species of apples on campus!<\/p>\n

To fully contribute to your perception of Wageningen as an agri-oriented city and receive the ultimate Wageningen experience, there was a tractor driving people around. How fun is that!?\ud83d\ude04\ud83d\ude9c<\/p>\n

Smoothie bike<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Need something refreshing?\ud83e\udee3 Then this nutritious smoothie would have been just for you, self-prepared by pedalling on a bike and made with a special ingredient – water lentils (also called duckweed)! Due to the duckweed’s high protein content, it is being implemented in food supplements or as an ingredient in salads. This product is newly emerging in the market, so it’s not yet widely accessible for all consumers.<\/p>\n

I also had the opportunity to give it a try raw! It actually had no distinct taste, only a really nice crunchy, popping texture and a refreshing aftertaste.<\/p>\n

Free bus travels<\/strong><\/h2>\n

At this year’s Open Day, the buses that go from Ede-Wageningen train station through WUR’s campus and the city centre were free for prospective students and visitors. It was a great and successful idea, making the city and getting to know the environment around it more accessible to everyone.<\/p>\n

“We like it, definitely a lot to see and enjoy! We visited the Marine Sciences and Food Technology programmes at the info market; also just attended the “Study in Wageningen” presentation.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

What’s next?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

If you were unable to come in person, don\u2019t worry! There is a Virtual Open Day<\/a> coming up on 3 April for all bachelor’s and master’s prospective students. The study programmes will give an insightful presentation, you\u2019ll be able to ask chat with students and our Student Service Centre, and many more. So, make sure to check that out! In the meantime, you can also chat with current WUR students<\/a> and ask all your questions.<\/p>\n
