A Day in My Life as a Food Safety & Quality Intern in the Netherlands <\/strong>\u2615\ud83d\udeb2<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Hi, I\u2019m Devi, a Master\u2019s student in Food Quality Management<\/a> at Wageningen University, currently working as a Food Safety and Quality Intern at a big coffee company in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n

Before you start reading, I have a little surprise waiting for you at the end of this blog,\u00a0 a quick guide to making the perfect cup of coffee. Trust me, it\u2019s worth it!<\/p>\n

Cycling My Way into the Day<\/strong><\/h3>\n

My day begins the Dutch way, on a bicycle. No matter the weather (okay\u2026 maybe almost no matter), I cycle all the way to my workplace. There\u2019s something incredibly calming about gliding past canals, waving at fellow cyclists, and breathing in that crisp morning air. It\u2019s not just a commute; it\u2019s a ritual that wakes me up better than any alarm ever could.<\/p>\n

Coffee First (and Latte Art Experiments!)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The moment I reach the office, it\u2019s straight to the coffee machine. Working in a coffee company has its perks, and I take them very seriously.<\/p>\n

\u201cWorking on my latte art\u2026 still waiting for my heart shapes to not look like abstract art!\u201d<\/p>\n

Some days it\u2019s a success, some days\u2026 let\u2019s just say it\u2019s a \u201ccreative interpretation.\u201d But either way, the day officially begins with that first sip of coffee.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are more than 60 different varieties of coffee, but Arabica and Robusta dominate the global market. Arabica is more aromatic and lower in caffeine. Robusta is stronger, more bitter, and has a higher caffeine content.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Morning Meetings & Food Safety Check<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once caffeinated, it\u2019s time for morning meetings. As a Food Safety and Quality intern, my role involves checking whether all safety parameters from the previous week were followed.<\/p>\n

We go through reports, analyse deviations (if any), and ensure everything meets strict food safety standards. It might sound technical, but it\u2019s incredibly fulfilling \u2014 knowing that our work directly impacts the quality and safety of products people consume every day.<\/p>\n

Fruit Break: A Dutch Workplace Tradition<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Mid-morning calls for a healthy break. One thing I love about working in the Netherlands? Free fruits at the office! \ud83c\udf4c\ud83c\udf4f<\/p>\n

It\u2019s such a simple yet thoughtful concept,\u00a0 \u201ca fruitful day begins with fruit.\u201d I usually grab an apple or a banana, chat with colleagues, and recharge for the next tasks.<\/p>\n

Planning & Preparing for a Factory Visit<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The next chunk of my day involves planning my upcoming factory visit to Germany. From designing the itinerary to aligning schedules and objectives, it\u2019s a mix of logistics and quality assurance planning.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s exciting because these visits give me a real-world understanding of how large-scale food production meets stringent safety standards.<\/p>\n

Lunch with Friends<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Lunch is never boring here. The company restaurant offers a wide variety of food \u2014 from salads to warm meals ,so picking what to eat is the hardest decision of the day.<\/p>\n

I usually sit with my friends, and we talk about everything from work to weekend plans. It\u2019s the perfect break that resets the day.<\/p>\n

Post-Lunch Walk by the River<\/strong><\/h3>\n

After lunch, I like to take a long walk by the river (especially when the weather is beautiful, which thankfully it often is lately).<\/p>\n

This is one of my favourite parts of the day , a little moment of calm in between work. The sound of water, the greenery, and the fresh air help me come back refreshed and focused.<\/p>\n

Back to Work (with an Iced Latte Break!)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Back at my desk, I dive into my afternoon tasks, documentation, quality checks, and coordinating things for upcoming activities.<\/p>\n

And of course\u2026 coffee break #2! This time, it\u2019s an iced latte.<\/p>\n

Honestly, the best part of working in a coffee company is getting to try different brews and coffee-making styles. It turns every coffee break into a mini tasting session.<\/p>\n

Ever wondered why coffee plants produce caffeine?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s actually a natural defense mechanism! The bitter taste helps protect the plant from insects.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Wrapping Up the Day<\/strong><\/h3>\n

I finish my meetings and tasks, wrap up everything neatly, and head home sharp at 5.<\/p>\n

One thing the Dutch culture has truly taught me is punctuality and work-life balance, your personal time matters just as much as your work.<\/p>\n

And just like that, I hop back on my cycle, heading home with a sense of accomplishment (and maybe already thinking about tomorrow\u2019s coffee).<\/p>\n
