A Weekend Unlike Any Other<\/h2>\n
When I first moved to the Netherlands, I expected beautiful canals, bicycles everywhere, and perhaps a little too much rain. What I didn’t expect was to witness one of the most vibrant celebrations of love, diversity, and inclusion I have ever experienced.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

This year, Amsterdam hosted WorldPride<\/a> for the very first time, welcoming people from across the globe to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community. Curious about the atmosphere everyone was talking about, I decided to spend a day exploring the city and it turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences I’ve had since moving to the Netherlands.<\/p>\n

A City Dressed in Every Colour<\/h2>\n

The moment I stepped out of Amsterdam Central Station<\/a>, the city felt different. Rainbow flags decorated streets, shop windows, bridges, and even boats. Music echoed through the canals, people danced freely, and strangers greeted one another with smiles that somehow made the city feel even warmer than usual.<\/p>\n

What surprised me most wasn’t just the scale of the celebration, but how naturally inclusion was woven into everyday life. Families with children, elderly couples, tourists, students, and locals all shared the same spaces, celebrating together. It wasn’t about one community celebrating alone. It felt like an entire city embracing the idea that everyone deserves to be themselves.<\/p>\n

Seeing Dutch Values in Action<\/h2>\n

As an international student, you’re constantly learning about a new country and not just through lectures and assignments, but through moments like these. WorldPride gave me a glimpse into values that are deeply rooted in Dutch society: equality, openness, and respect for individual identity. Seeing these values come alive outside the classroom made me appreciate the culture in a completely different way.<\/p>\n

Of course, the celebrations were visually spectacular. The colourful decorations reflected beautifully on Amsterdam’s canals, live performances filled the streets with energy, and every corner seemed to offer another photo-worthy moment. Yet beyond the colours and festivities, what stayed with me was the overwhelming sense of acceptance.<\/p>\n

Walking through the crowds, I realised that celebrations like WorldPride are about much more than parades and music. They create spaces where people feel safe to express who they are, while also encouraging others to listen, learn, and celebrate differences. As someone living abroad, that feeling of belonging resonated deeply with me.<\/p>\n

One thing I’ve come to love about studying in the Netherlands is how every weekend offers an opportunity to experience something new. Whether it’s a local market, King’s Day<\/a>, a music festival, or now WorldPride, each event teaches me something about Dutch culture while also helping me grow personally.<\/p>\n

A Memory I’ll Always Keep<\/h2>\n

Looking back, I didn’t return home with just beautiful photographs. I returned with a broader perspective. Living in another country isn’t only about earning a degree; it’s about discovering new ideas, challenging your own perspectives, and collecting experiences that stay with you long after graduation.<\/p>\n

If you’re an international student wondering whether it’s worth taking the train to Amsterdam during major events, my answer is simple: go. Sometimes the best lessons happen outside the classroom, and sometimes all it takes is walking through a city painted in every colour imaginable to remind you how beautiful diversity can be.<\/p>\n

Studying at Wageningen University has already introduced me to people from all over the world. Experiencing WorldPride felt like an extension of that international community, a reminder that while we all come from different backgrounds, celebrating our differences is what truly brings us together.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
