Outside “Pets” in Wageningen and Nearby
Do you have a pet in your home country? I do and as an international student, I know how hard it is not to be able to see or pet him. This blog is for when you start missing your furry friend a little more than usual.
Luckily, Wageningen is not a big city, so it allows you to see some animals quite often. I’ll share with you a couple of places in Wageningen and the nearby cities where you can do just that!
In the city
There are plenty of locations where you can find cows or sheep roaming around the outskirts of Wageningen. It is always so calming but at the same time energising to see animals, and even give them a few pets if they allow, of course!:D
When the temperatures start rising a bit, head to Bennekom (currently writing this at a feeling temperature of -6 °C, brr). On the road to there, you’ll see the most adorable deer. If you are lucky enough, you might even catch them being fed by their owners, so they are close to the fence. I stumbled upon them very randomly one day, and ever since I visit them from time to time. Their cute noses put a smile on my face for the whole day.
Speaking of heart-warming animals, at the Rhine River, there are a lot of sheep and cows. Often, the cows are freely grazing at the river, even in the summer when students are gathered there for picnics. They are so unbothered haha, but let’s be honest, sometimes during the summer heat we all need a little swim and refreshment, right?
As you know, the Netherlands is famous for its canals. Wageningen, of course, also has ones in which you can see ducks, birds and geese all year round! In almost every water place, whether it is a canal, a river or a lake, you can spot them! My favourite location is the canal Stadsgracht. It is quite long, and you can either enjoy it by sitting on the grass right in front of Action or follow it downstream to the “entrance” of the city centre/church location, passing by Nudepoort park.
Bike Around
Ede is another nice alternative where you can go to explore. For a long time, I only associated the city with the train station haha, but there are many nice places to visit.
For something different from your usual, you can head to the pet shop Pets Place. It is very big and has many animals you can see, as well as an eating place on the second floor. To put the cherry on top and make the day tip even better, stop by Proosdijpark, which is a bit above the pet store. It is such a nice park to stroll around! There’s a big lake with geese and ducks, and even a farm! Public farm Proosdij is a must when you’re there. It’s free to visit and open to everyone, so go say hi to all kinds of farm animals and even some birds.
That’s it for now, but definitely stay tuned for more!:)
Hug your pet from me,
Zlatoslava
