A Saturday In Wageningen
If you’re a student at Wageningen University (WUR), then you know Saturdays are special. I’m always looking forward to this day of the week, as it’s usually as vibrant as you’re about to see.
But what’s so different about Saturdays in Wageningen?
Me-time
Since starting my thesis, I am often somewhere in between meetings, finding literature, and emails..all over the place. At least it felt like that in the beginning.
However, having a day off where I can fully enjoy my “me-time” is for sure the highlight of my week.
My Saturday morning started with a nice breakfast and a bit after that I headed to the gym. I love working out relatively early in my schedule and this day was perfect for that. After my self-care, haha, it was time for another exciting activityy! See more.👇
Saturday Market
Every Wednesday and Saturday, there is a market at the Wageningen city center. It is definitely something to look at as it brings people together and is nice to see what is offered!🥕🧑🌾
It was the weekend before Easter in the Netherlands, 28-29th March, and as always, the market was in “full bloom”. All the stands with fresh fruits&veggies, fish, nuts&snacks, sweet treats, and cheese trucks were open. People were out, the city was lively, and having nice sunny weather was the cherry on top!
I met with my friends there and took a walk around. We even passed by some friends working at the market to say a quick hi.
This time, because of the upcoming celebrations, there was a “petting zoo” with a couple of sheep and my favourite bit – you could colour farm-fresh eggs.🧺
So, of course, we had to join, haha! Letting the creative side loose while having a lovely chat was much needed.
Roaming Around
Afterwards, it was time to get some steps in and walk up the main street as the tradition follows. There was music and even a big Easter Bunny giving people chocolate eggs.
We took a turn and headed to Torckpark and the gem of spring in Wageningen – The Old Lady. This is the largest magnolia tree in the Netherlands and is breathtaking! You must visit it when it’s blooming, which is the end of March – early April. Chilling in the park itself is also quite nice – there’s a canal and even remains of an old castle!
Sometimes being out is “dangerous” because the shopping spree starts..or in our case: restocking snacks reserves.😆We did a quick Kruidvat and Action trip for some necessities and sweets, after which we headed to the canaal in front of Action – Stadsgracht.

In the Netherlands, in the early months of the year, too much sun is never too much sun.
Stadsgracht is the perfect place to chill, as it’s so peaceful to sit and watch the ducks roam around and swim. After we’ve let the sun hit our faces for a hot moment, we decided to make good use of our fresh purchases. Or so to say – to play with the badminton set we’ve just spontaneously bought at Action! Did a quick pay, and it was time to head home.
As you can see, Saturdays are meant to be enjoyed, whether you’re exploring solo or hanging out with friends. So next time you have a free weekend, especially with the weather warming up, do yourself a favour, get out there and hit the market!😉
See you around,
Zlatolsava
