Eco-Furnish your room

By Natalia Giner Laguarda

I am originally from Spain, Valencia. I'm a 23 years old Spa...

If you are a new student coming to Wageningen, I bet you are stressed out trying to figure out how to turn your four-walls-room into a decent and cozy bedroom. As a first thought, this might seem not only hard and thought, but also very expensive. However, Wageningen is an exception for this. Based in my experience, Wageningen is one of the only places where you can furnish your room in the most ecofriendly and cheapest price. In this blog, I would like to share with you some tips that I whish I would have known before spending hundreds of euros in several furniture shops.

Studentplaza, the furniture hub

I will start with the first and most useful tip; Student Plaza, the Facebook group where you could buy each single item to furnish your room. If you are new in Wageningen, this might sound strange and out of context for you, but actually; there is no single person living in Wageningen which is not following this Facebook group.

The group has already more than 27.000 people. In the group you can find posted items ranging from simple hangers sold for 1 euro to fridges, sofas, tables or wardrobes. Each day, you will find a couple of new posts of people selling their stuff. This means that Wageningen Student Plaza is very useful also when you want to get rid of stuff that is no longer useful for you while getting a bit of money. Of course, there are some other Facebook groups that have the same function as Wageningen Student Plaza and these are: Marketplace, Koopjeshoek, Marketplaats van Gelderland or Marktplaats van Gelderland.

Emmaus Wageningen, Second hand shop

In Emmaus you can find all types of goods which have been sorted out and repaired after being collected. Emmaus displays all these items for sale in the shop at Herenstraat 9 or Vijzelstraat 1. The shop is just around the corner of the Herenstraat 9 location. Here, you will find clothing, shoes, curtains, books and vinyl records. But if I have to be honest, there is no way I can inform you in advance what you will find there; as the articles displayed each time are completely unpredictable. However, I can tell you that there are 5 main sections in the shop: downstairs you will find lighting, beds, furniture and electrical appliances; while upstairs you will see bags, toys, small household goods, clothes and some other unclassifiable items.

Ikea

As a last option to furnish your room, you can always open the Ikea website. Personally, I would prefer to go there myself to have a look at the pieces of furniture that they have in there. However, if you are planning to buy big things, it would be better to request the delivery service as Ikea will send the desired items to your house. The closest Ikea is located in Amersfoort and you can get there by train. As a suggestion, I would check out the Kallax collection which is very famous in Wageningen due to its flexibility of use.

Action and Hema

By this moment, I guess you will have found already the main furniture to furnish your room. The next step, will be to decorate your room and make it cozy and personal to spend your time in Wageningen. The best places in Wageningen to find decoration stuff for your room are Action and Hema. In here you will find little boxes, candles, pillows, blankets, flours, cutlery and many other things to decorate your room however you wish.

I hope that by now you have enough ideas to start furnishing your room without spending too much money.

Good luck making cozy your Wageningen-home!

I am originally from Spain, Valencia. I'm a 23 years old Spanish girl who is in love with sports and the sun. I love travelling and running wherever I am. You will find me for sure in Sport Centre de Bongerd as is probably my second house (both the gym and the bar).

I did my biotechnology Bachelor in Valencia and even though I liked it very much, I was still CURIOUS about how far it could go. Hence, I decided to give a shot in The Netherlands and I came three years ago to do my erasmus. Then I came again for my Master's (Biotechnology & Molecular Life Science). Synthetic Biology is by far my favorite field in Biotech, and exploring as much as possible in this field is my goal here.

I would love to share my experiences as an international student to whoever is interested and of course I would be more than happy to solve all your questions :)

A nice piece of writing. Thanks for the details. As an incoming student, I found it very helpful.
